Literature Text

The first fear being unguarded knowledge,
We decided to rectify by burning your books.
Great funeral pyres we built.
If you look closely
You'd swear you could see those wingéd words
Flying upwards on inky pillars of smoke.

This fear once established was hard to dislodge.
So freedom of speech and thought had to go.
Great funeral pyres we built
If you look closely
You'd swear they were shouting those heretical words,
Writhing in the flames and the heat.

The final fear being freedom
We set about burning your boats.

The first fear, and the last.
We keep you safe from fear and harm.

well, what do you think it's about? and do you think the anonymous 'we' are good or bad? and why?

is ignorance bliss?

I finally got time to read and comment today. :D

I think this is amazing... first thing I really noticed was the perspective and the point of view. Second thing I noticed was the lack of emotion completely in the first stanza... it doesn't feel anything, as if the person was numb, or indifferent... or simply mindless, you know?

The imagery is beautiful... and makes it even more bitter sweet as a result. I am reminded of the book... fahrenheit 451, I think it's called? O.o

I don't think you need some words... some words are .. well, not necessary, and detract from the directness of this piece. Like the last line in the second stanza... you don't really need 'the', but eh.

Also... it may be an idea to focus on the alliteration of F... like in the second stanza:

Fear once established, hard to dislodge.
Freedom of speech, thought had to go, and Great
Funeral pyres we built

Reminds me of dystopia, I have to say.

I'm not sure about the last stanza... part of me feels you don't need it at all, but eh.

My favourite was the first stanza.
